Barcelona V Villarreal - As it happened.
As always, we thank you for joining us tonight. Goodnight!
FT: Barcelona 2-1 Villarreal. A much stronger Barcelona demonstrate that there's still some work to do, but not all is lost for the Catalans, who are clearly much more comfortable when at home. Griezmann will have silenced some critics, and wonderboy Ansu Fati keeps his impressive run, but Leo Messi's possible calf injury is a big downside tonight. Meanwhile, Villarreal end their winning streak, but Santi Cazorla is as impressive as ever and that's always a plus.
Griezmann has an AMAZING shot to double score another one in the last moments of the game, but his volley goes JUST over the bar and that's the last kick of the game!
Three minutes of added time!
Busquets received a yellow card right before that free-kick...
Albiol fouls Fati on the left and Barca have a free-kick in a dangerous position... Pique throws it, and it's a perfect strike but Asenjo somehow also makes the perfect save! Barcelona had it!
Valverde's men fly forward again, but they are flagged offside for the fourth time tonight. If their runs had been timed better, they could be out of sight by now.
Now Fati goes down in the box and the crowd call for a penalty. VAR will check, but it looks like it will not be awarded.
Double yellows here: Albiol goes into the book after a late challenge in midfield, and Junior Firpo is also booked.
Another big chance for Fati here but it's just wide! What a talented youngster Barcelona have in their hands here.
Fati nearly makes an immediate impact as he plays in Griezmann, but the World Cup winner is flagged offside as he fires his volley over the crossbar.
Barcelona fans rise to their feet to clap off Suarez, with Fati getting just over 10 minutes to impress.
Calleja has decided to go for it as he sends on Bacca, with midfielder Cazorla making way.
The tempo has really dropped off in the second half and that is a shame, especially after Villarreal's fightback in the first half.
Zambo Anguissa is the latest man into the referee's book after a poor tackle.
De Jong gets forward for the first time since stepping off the bench but he sees his shot blocked on the edge of the box. The Dutchman has brought a lot of energy to Barcelona in this second half.
Moi tries a shot from far back, but it is comfortably saved by Ter Stegen.
Gerard Moreno is off for Villarreal and is replaced by Moi Gomez.
Ekambi into the area and tries a shot, but it is deflected wide. Villarreal very much on this, but Barca clear the subsequent corner.
Ter Stegen comes way out of his area to head a ball out of play as Villarreal looked to attack down the right.
Frenkie de Jong replaces Sergi Roberto in the midfield.
A change for Villarreal as Ontiveros is replaced by Karl Toko Ekambi.
Junior and Griezmann combine on the left just as Villarreal's defence is weak. but the cross is cleared for a corner!
Chuckwueze had it but the Nigerian star shoots high and wide!
Dembele brilliantly gets away from Javier Ontiveros and sets up Luis Suarez, but the Uruguayan didn't look to be expecting a pass and can't get a convincing shot away. Asenjo claims...
Cazorla so close at the other end to making it 2-2, but Ter Stegen is there to save the day! SO close!
Griezmann is booked for a late tackle to Chukwueze.
Super play down the left as Dembele races away and crosses for Griezmann, but the former Atletico forward cannot make contact at the far post...
Messi, who had to be assisted by the medical team in the first half, is replaced by in-shape Ousmane Dembele.
Second half underway in the Camp Nou!
HT: Barcelona 2-1 Villarreal. Two stunning long-range volleys have dominated this first half, with Arthur Melo scoring it for Barça and Villarreal legend Cazorla doing it for the visitors. Encouraging stuff for Valverde here, but this game is far from over... See you in 15!
STUNNING long-range effort from Cazorla, which moves in the air and beats Ter Stegen, who almost caught it but it was just too high for him to reach. Barça fans will be disappointed at the sight of yet another clean sheet that escapes them, but what a strike that was!
GOAAAAAAAALLLLL FROM VILLARREAL!
Gerard Moreno finds space down the left, but Samuel Chukwueze can't make much contact on his cross and it's put behind for a corner...
Messi creates a shooting opportunity for Arthur, but the midfielder is denied by some brave defending from Villarreal. Several players rush across the box to block his shot and the visitors eventually clear their lines.
Now Suarez is down and complaining about a blow to the face from Raul Albiol.
He is back on, but if they've got ANY doubt over their star's injury, surely he should be taken off?
It could be serious as Dembele is seen warming up.
Some worries here as Messi is seen receiving some treatment on the sidelines after a tackle that lead to a fall. He just recently recovered from a calf injury.
Messi, surrounded by three Villarreal players in his own half, gets away from them all with quick feet and sublime skill, but he is fouled...
Yellow card for Sergi Roberto for an earlier tackle to a Villarreal player.
Barça get a decent shot here as Griezmann finds himself in a head-to-head with Asenjo who JUST manages to take the ball from him! Villarreal have their goalkeeper to thank here.
Barcelona are already in total control inside the first 20 minutes, and that defeat to Granada now seems a distant memory. This could be a long night for the Yellow Submarine.
WHAT A STRIKE FROM ARTHUR MELO!!! The Brazilian midfielder scores a brilliant volley from at least 25 metres out, and even his teammates can't quite believe how beautiful that was! Encouraging start from Barcelona here.
GOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!! SECOND ONE!
Arthur chips a ball into the area, but it's headed away. Barca all over Villarreal so far. Such a different team at home...
Messi, fresh off from winning FIFA's The Best award, is back with his superb skill display. He is so enjoyable to watch.
And Villarreal have a very good chance in the counter!
This was exactly what Barcelona were needing and they've done it quickly! Griezmann moves at the near post to glance a Messi corner past Sergio Asenjo. Superb finish from the Frenchman... it needed the slightest of touches and he got it just right!
AND ANTOINE GRIEZMANN OPENS THE SCORE!!!!!
Second corner for Barcelona as the hosts try to get this game started off right.
Villarreal clear the danger at the first attempt thanks to a header at the near post.
And we're off!!!!
We are 10 min from kick-off, and it's the Camp Nou's birthday today! What a beauty.
Their top scorer this season is former Espanyol man Gerard Moreno with five, putting him second in the Pichichi chart behind Karim Benzema, and he will definitely be one to look out for Barcelona's defence tonight.
Villarreal, who have missed out on just two seasons of top flight football since being promoted to La Liga for the first time in 1998, spent much of last season in the relegation zone but eventually scrambled their way out and finished 14th.
Meanwhile, VIllarreal have made a decent start to the campaign this year as they are unbeaten in their last three games in the league.
Despite winning the title last season, there was speculation that Valverde would be sacked in the summer following their Champions League collapse at Liverpool. Valverde held on, but is not exactly inspiring much confidence at the moment. Injuries have taken their toll, but should Barca lose tonight, it could well make the coach's position effectively untenable.
The Argentine attacker has recovered from a calf injury suffered in pre-season and, having picked up FIFA's The Best award last night, will be looking to lead Barca out of their mini-slump over the last couple of games.
Messi makes his first start of the season! And he is joined by Griezmann and Suarez for the first time, too. This would be slightly more exciting if Barcelona ere not going through their worst La Liga start in 25 years...
Villarreal starting XI: Asenjo; Peña, Albiol, Torres, Quintillá; Anguissa, Iborra; Chukwueze, Cazorla, Ontiveros; Gerard.
Barcelona starting XI: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Piqué, Lenglet, Firpo; Roberto, Busquets, Arthur; Messi, Suárez, Griezmann.
Let's take a look at the line-ups, shall we?
