The pair were the top scorers for 'Les Aiglons' last season, netting 16 and 18 respectively last season, leading to strong rumours that they could both leave the club this summer.
Vieira, widely considered one of the best midfielders in the world during his playing career, only took charge at the club this summer, replacing Lucien Favre following his move to Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking following the session, Vieira admitted that he had "no idea where either player was."
"We were expecting him [Plea] today but he wasn't here and it wasn't foreseen. My wish is to keep the players who want to be part of the project," Vieira explained.
French publication 'L'Équipe' claimed that Plea's absence was down to a problem with his plane tickets, though no reason was give for Balotelli failing to turn up.
The future of his star pair adds another element of intrigue at the Allianz Riviera as the 42-year-old Vieira launches his top-level managerial career in earnest.
