Wojciech Szczesny's future was never secure at Arsenal once Cech signed for the 'Gunners', but it appears he may have found some stability in Italy, as the successor to Gianluigi Buffon no less. The Italian legend is retiring at the end of the season, but Szczesny has been forced into the limelight earlier than expected as the veteran 'keeper has struggled with injuries recently.
Given Cech's well documented struggles, will Arsenal regret the sale of the Pole after seeing him play for the Italian giants? Cech was actually Arsenal's best player in their loss to Tottenham on Saturday, and he gave them a fighting chance right up until full time, but these good performances are in the minority. The stats make grim reading.
This season, no player has committed more errors that have resulted in an opposition goal than Cech (four in 27 appearances) in Europe's top five leagues. By comparison, Szczesny has only committed three errors that have led to a goal in his entire two-and-a-half year stay in Italy, or 84 games. Furthermore, none of those have come this season.
Many would point to Juventus' defence as the main reason but Szczesny has also spent a season and a half behind a porous Roma defence, and has coped well.
Over the last two and a half years, Szczesny beats Cech in save success rate (74.8 per cent to Cech's 73.8 per cent) and he has only conceded six goals in 12 games this season.
Arsene Wenger and his team will be hoping that Szczesny doesn't become another one that got away.
