Roma were subject to criticism as they progressed to the Champions League semi-finals with a stunning 3-0 comeback against Barcelona, for their very physical approach to the game.
Although they were only slapped with two yellow cards during the match, Thompson has called on the 'Reds' and the officials to be tougher and stronger.
He told 'Sky Sports': "They will try everything, from trying to get our players sent off to being overly physical, so we need to be ready for it and need a tough referee.''
''Physically, verbally, everything that Italian football has been know for over the last 40 years. They will do anything it takes to win.''
''Barcelona got kicked all over the pitch in Rome. Having said that, Barcelona were complacent and missed chances, so we have to be ready to take advantage of our chances.''
The former Liverpool star also stressed the vital boost that Roberto Firmino signing a new long-term contract will hand the 'Reds'.
He commented: ''There have been so many positives this season but Firmino committing his future to the club is right up there with the biggest.''
''I think he is one of the top forwards in the world, certainly in the top 10. If he hadn't signed, especially after his mate Philippe Coutinho left, I would be really nervous.''
