The hosts came into the game knowing a win would take them above Borussia Dortmund into 2nd place, and they looked in the mood as Werner tested Zingerle early on.
Leipzig hadn't won at home in the league since a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen on 15th February, so no matter the opponent it was going to be difficult.
Werner has started to hold talks with Chelsea, and another player who has been strongly linked with a move away is Upamecano. The French CB picked up the first booking of the game for his challenge on Srbeny.
Leipzig almost took the lead when Werner's shot was well blocked but they didn't have to wait too long to get the first goal of the game.
In the 27th minute, Nkunku played through Werner who unselfishly cut it back for the Schick who slotted it into the net. The Czech has now scored three goals in three games.
The hosts were cruising and looked like they would go on to score a couple more, but in the 43rd minute after giving away a foul, Upamecano kicked the ball away and was shown his second yellow card. A foolish thing to do.
This gave the basement boys a glimmer of hope, and they had a few half-chances after the break, Proger's free-kick the best of them. Despite down to 10 men, Olmo then had a shot which stung Zinbgerle's fingertips before Werner missed a sitter after he took the ball past the keeper after a slack back pass. He only had to tap into the empty net but put it wide. Not one of the potential Chelsea players' finest moments.
In the final 20 minutes, Antwi-Adjei blazed a shot wide and another into the side netting, while in the 89th minute Werner should have done better but fired over from a decent position.
Leipzig were made to pay for their missed chances and Upamecano's sending off when Strohdiek drilled home from yards out after Ritter's shot had been parried by Gulacsi. The hosts sit 3rd, 3 points above Gladbach while Paderborn find themselves 8 points from the playout position and 11 points from safety.
