England struggled in their last Nations League match as they were held to a 0-0 draw in Croatia, in a match they will feel they should have won.
Gareth Southgate now needs to get a win in the match against Spain to have a chance of progressing in the competition, but will find it difficult after losing in their previous meeting at Wembley in Septemeber.
The manager has made a point of buliding the team for the future since taking up his role as England manager just under two years ago, and will continue that by giving the 22 year-old Tottenham midfielder a chance to show his international credentials.
Speaking about Winks's future, the England boss said: “It is still early in his development. I was speaking to him about the game with Barça last week and those nights you learn so much from.
“He is the type of player we want to build the future around. We have a few – Nathaniel Chalobah, Winks, Ross Barkley, Gomez, too – who really missed a year’s football with injury, so it is great to see them back. We recognise we have to keep progressing and advancing.
"We always know we have to keep getting results, but also look to two years’ time as well.”
