A slow start to this Europa League was sharply contrasted with the palpitating atmosphere at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. Both teams defending tightly, it was the hosts that seemed more eager to approach the opposing goal.
Despite Anderlecht's efforts, United saw most of the ball, and it was the away side who would enjoy the first chance which did not come until around the 20-minute mark. Ibrahimovic is on the end of Rashford's cross, but Ruben saves well. The ball fell to Lingard, who poked the ball on to the upright.
The match continued similarly, with Carrick holding the ball well but with few clear chances at both ends. Finally, Valencia, after a great run, provided the ball from the right which was struck by Rashford. Ruben saved well again, but Mkhitaryan raced to the ball first to score from the angle.
After the break, Anderlecht managed to claim back some of the ball and they put pressure on United. The visitors eventually managed to cope with the pressure and take a step forward. With a lack for goalscoring opportunities, the tension was palpable on the pitch.
In the final fifteen minutes, the game entered a dangerous stage for Mourinho's side, with end-to-end play bringing the game back to life, awarding chances to both teams. Victory was not sealed for United yet, and with five more minutes to go, Dendoncker equalised. Obradovic crossed well from the left and the midfielder rushed into the box to place a powerful header past Romero.
Mourinho will be disappointed after Manchester United thought they had finished the job and allowed the game to open up again. It is all open for the second leg, though the Red Devils will be happy to have got an away goal in Brussels.
