Police in the run up to the game were expecting violence in the first Hamburg derby for seven years, with fights breaking out in the city earlier in the week.
1.500 police officers were deployed to keep the peace, and they did largely a successful job, apart form the stink bombs being let off.
A local newspaper even reported that excrement was spread on the ground to the away stand entrance.
On the pitch itself it was a much tamer affair, with the teams playing out a 0-0 draw in a match without many clear-cut chances.
