United have never been keen on extending Smalling's loan spell at Roma. The coronavirus stoppage affected a lot of club's plans and the Italian side will be without a key player for the Europa League.
Now it seems like an agreement is less likely to be struck than ever before as United has refused to negotiate, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio says.
Roma have 36 hours to agree Smalling's loan deal. If a deal is still not completed, they will not be able to register the player for the final stages of the Europa League.
This will not stop Roma trying to get Smalling to rejoin them for next season. However. the player is not at all happy at not being able to complete the job off at Roma.
Therefore, Roma will not be able to count on the English defender for the important clash versus Sevilla. Smalling has been a regular all season. He has ended up making 30 Serie A appearances.
