Germany's announcement of their 23-man squad for the Russia World Cup on Tuesday caused a big shock, due to the glaring absence of Leroy Sane. The Manchester City winger has been tearing it up in the Premier League this season, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award, as well as playing a big part in City's successful title campaign.
Although some have pointed to a potential lack of versatility in Sane's play, Joachim Low's decision to leave the 22-year-old at home is very hard to understand given that the winger has contributed 10 goals and 15 assists this season. There is no doubt that Sane himself will be gutted, but he has taken to social media to respond in a gracious manner to the news, wishing his compatriots good luck.
"Thank you so much everyone for your encouraging messages yesterday and today," he posted. "I'm obviously disappointed I won't participate in the World Cup but I have to accept this decision and I'll give it my all to bounce back stronger! Nothing but the best of success to the DFB [Germany] Team in Russia. Go get that title!"
