Manchester United make shock Godín swoop

According to various reports in England, Manchester United have made a shock deadline day-swoop for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godín.

The 'Red Devils' are thought to have made an offer of €25m for the 32-year-old in a bid to invoke his release clause, but at this moment in time there is no suggestion that the player wants to leave Atletico.

United boss Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a centre-back ahead of the transfer deadline, but has so far been frustrated in moves for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina.

Despite Mourinho saying on Thursday morning that he wasn't confident of making any additions, it is understood that the club have made a late bid for Godín's services.

The vastly experienced Uruguayan has made 122 appearances for his country and is widely considered to be among the best defenders in world football.

Godín was included in FIFA's best XI for this summer's World Cup and has copious top-level experience having played at three World Cups and four Copa Americas as well as making over 300 appearances for Atleti.

However, the main sticking point for United appears to be that Godín is happy in the Spanish capital and would like time to consider uprooting his family to another country, something United do not have.

United are thought to be open to cashing in on several of their defenders in order to create space in the squad for Godín, with Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling the favourites to make way amid reported interest from Everton and Wolves.

Godín is a club legend at Atleti, in part thanks to his thumping header against Barcelona in the final game of the 2013/14 season which secured the club their first league title in 18 years.

The veteran has won two Europa Leagues, the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey during his time in the Spanish capital and with Atleti looking well positioned for another title push this season United's approach is likely to me met with short shrift.
