Italy are currently in a similar position to the one England are striving to recover from. The former 2006 world champions failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia this summer, but will face the England side in an international friendly on Tuesday evening.
They will not be heading into the match in high spirits, having been defeated by Argentina 2-0 on Friday, and yet to appoint a permanent successor to coach Giampiero Ventura who was sacked in November last year.
The country are considering no less than five different candidates to potentially take the helm, including Chelsea coach Antonio Conte and caretaker manager Luigi Di Biagio.
The Italy squad have been looking to an unlikely source of inspiration in a bid to change their luck - England. Gareth Southgate's squad has moved on from their 'Golden Generation' and are looking to younger players to fill the void such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling.
Defender Leonardo Bonucci said: ''We are playing against a team that managed to undergo change very well. They are a very talented group of young players who have a lot of international experience.''
The 30-year-old then added: ''We have a much younger team with not much international experience. You cannot compare our players born in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 compared to the England players born in the same years.''
Despite saying that Italy: ''are undergoing a major change and cannot be expected to start winning straight away,'' Bonucci added that they: ''have the possibility to create problems for this English team.''
