The four games of the English Premier League season have been exciting, to say the least, with plenty of goals scored, even more talking points and the introduction of VAR dividing opinion.
Heading into the international break in early September, when nations picked up their Euro 2020 campaigns, we find Liverpool on top of the charts following a perfect four-game start to the season. The Reds, who finished as Premier League runners up last season and Champions League winners, have a dozen points on the board.
That places them ahead of Manchester City who are poised to strike in second. The champions have 10 points to show for their efforts thanks to three wins and a draw. They are closely followed by Leicester City in third and Crystal Palace perched in fourth.
Building a rivalry
Manchester City are building a rivalry with Liverpool, but bookmakers are keen to stick with the former and have The Cityzens as favourites in their quest for a historic three league titles in-a-row. That would be something special, but it comes as no surprise to see the money men stick closely to Pep Guardiola and co.
There are many ways to bet on this season, with prices available on the outright champions, top-four finish, top-six finish, relegation, top goal scorer and cup multiples available at famous online bookmakers or one of the many new betting apps popping up. Premier League football is exciting, but it can’t quite compare to earning a cash profit from the play.
One of the main reasons major bookmakers are keen to hold their ground and stay with pre-season favourites Manchester City is their sublime attack. The champions are already the highest scorers of this season with 14 goals registered in four games. That’s astonishing. The stats show it is two better than Liverpool and as many as both Man Utd and Spurs combined. Its little wonder fans are raving about the blues attack, with experts predicting they could be about to smash through their own Premier League goals scored record.
Aguero and Sterling a fearsome partnership
Sergio Aguero has picked up where he left off last season and stands proudly atop the goalscorer charts at the time of writing. He has notched six already from 267 minutes of competitive action and that translates to a goal every 45 minutes. He has put six of his nine shots on target and even chipped in with an assist. Aguero is 4/1 favourite to be top goalscorer at William Hill.
Teammate and fellow Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling has been in breath-taking form for both club and country, scoring important goals for his regular employers as well as chipping in for England as they speed towards qualification for Euro 2020. Sterling was electric during pre-season and hit the ground running when things got serious.
The Englishman has scored five goals in 360 minutes of play – a goal every 72 minutes – and the stats sheet show Sterling has put seven of his eight shots on target. He’s 13/2 best price at 10Bet to win the golden boot come spring and that’s sure to be popular with value hunters.
Aguero and Sterling have attracted the plaudits so far, and rightly so, but they have not done it all on their own. Much of their success, and the goal scoring start made by Manchester City, can be credited to their support which comes in the form of Rodrigo who has been providing assists, freeing up space and getting his team into advanced areas. Belgian superstar Kevin De Bruyne seems to be going from strength to strength and he’s in line for another standout season. When he plays well Man City win football matches by a comfortable margin, it really is as simple as that. De Bruyne can assist, defend and is even capable of the type of individual skills that can turn a game on its head.
Numbers are up
After four games, Manchester City have scored 14 goals which averages 3.5 per game. If they were able to maintain that form over the course of the 2019/20 Premier League season, Pep’s boys would finish up smashing through the 100 goals mark and notching an incredible 133 for the football year.
Incredible, but there really is no reason why they can’t and won’t do just that. To put it into perspective, the most goals in a season by a Premier League club is 106 and that was achieved by Man City during the 2017-18 era. The also registered the biggest goal difference that season with +79 to their name.
There are a number of specials betting markets available which allow Man City backers to support their team at a better price, avoiding the odds-on quote about them winning the league. Included in that list is the trophy multiples market. The Citizens to bag a domestic treble is a cracking 17/1 – top price at Betfair – and that’s sure to attract attention.
