The FA has announced that England will play another match away from the national stadium when they face Switzerland on 11th September, following the success of the friendly match against Costa Rica at Leed's Elland Road.
While previous to the building of the new Wembley Stadium in 2007 it was common for the national side to play games at grounds arround the country, in recent years Wembley has been the exclusive venue of England's home matches except for two friendlies at the Etihad Stadium and the Stadium of Light prior to Euro 2016. However, the lack of atmosphere and large amount of empty seats that can often be seen at England's home matches has meant that fans responded positively to the decision to play the Three Lions' final warm-up match before the World Cup away from the national stadium.
This announcement comes at a time when Wembley is subject to a bid from Fulham owner Shahid Khan, which means that England would potentially be forced to play more games away from the stadium in north London should that bid be successful.
Currently, while the FA seem happy to schedule friendlies at various stadiums around the country, it is unclear as to whether this policy will be extended to competitive fixtures.
