Real Madrid once again beat city rivals Atletico Madrid in the second Champions League final between the teams in three seasons. The final included Sergio Ramos' goal to put Real Madrid ahead and referee Mark Clattenburg has always said it was the wrong decision to give the goal.
Former English referee Mark Clattenburg gave an interview to the 'Daily Mail' about that 2016 Champions League final. He talked about Ramos' goal and the problems Pepe always used to give him.
He had no problem in admitting that he did not like refereeing Pepe: "He's a player you can't trust. You can be officiating an easy game and all of a sudden he does something," Clattenburg said.
He recalled how he hit back at Pepe during the Champions League final. "Pepe made a foul on Torres, he got very angry and in a perfect English he said to me: 'Mark, this is never a penalty'. And I replied 'look, your first goal should have been disallowed' and he was quiet," the former referee recalled.
"People will think it's bad because two wrongs don't make a right. We referees don't think like that, but the players do, so I knew that saying that to him, he'd accept the situation," Clattenburg added.
That mistake is something he always remembers. "In that final, Real Madrid took the lead in the first half, but Sergio Ramos' goal was offside, but not by much," he said.
"We realised at half-time. It was a difficult situation and my assistant got it wrong," Mark Clattenburg concluded.
