The centre-back came through the ranks of Brentford's youth academy, but did not make enough of an impression to ever start in the league for the 'Bees'.
As a result, he left to join Yorkshire-based club Barnsley and after impressing there, joined the then-Premier League outfit Swansea.
Mawson could not stop the 'Swans' from getting relegated last season, and completed a move to Fulham for a fee in the region of £15 million.
Somewhat bizarely, his youth team are set to pocket a substantial fee because of that deal according to 'Sky Sports'.
After he left Brentford on a free transfer, the club agreed with his next club Barnsley that they would get 40% of a sell-on clause that the 'Terriers' would receive from Swansea when Mawson moved on from the Liberty Stadium.
With the deal going through, that means that Barnsley pocket £1.5 million from Swansea, and then 40% of that fee is passed on to Brentford, totalling £600,000.
The centre-back only made one appearance for Brentford in a cup game, but have now nicely profitted from the success that the player has received since leaving their ranks.
