Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by Man City pending an investigation, his club have revealed.
The 27 year-old left back has been charged by the police and the Sky Blues have taken swift action. "Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation. The matter is subject to a legal process and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete," the club said in a statement.
Cheshire police release a statement saying that Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. "The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021. Mendy is set to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 27 August," the statement said.
The Frenchman will not be wearing the City shirt again until the investigation has been completed.
Mendy's last appearance came in the 1-0 loss to Tottenham on the opening weekend of the season as he did not play in the 5-0 thumping of Norwich. Mendy has made 75 appearances for the club and scored two goals as well as getting 12 assists.
It is exactly the news manager Pep Guardiola did not want to hear ahead of Saturday's huge Premier League showdown with Arsenal.
