The month of February 2020 was controversial for Barcelona, not only because of Martin Braithwaite's signing, but because of the tensions between the board and the players surrounding Ernesto Valverde's sacking. The last incident lead to a fallout between Lionel Messi, the team's captain, and Eric Abidal, a former player and now the sports director.
The president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, had to mediate between the two to bring peace, spearing Abidal who had been reportedly close to being fired.
The president gave him a wake-up call, but that situation has led to a loss of confidence from the staff. Jordi Alba even referred to that clash between Abidal and Messi.
"They're throwing enough sh*t at us from the outside to throw it at each other," he said bluntly. As it currently stands, in this time of crisis nobody has noticed Abidal.
So says the newspaper 'AS', which explains that Abidal has lost the club's trust and has had no say in the negotiation between the captains and the board for the reduction of salaries that was officially announced a few days ago.
This means that the sports director is no longer the link between players and the board, which is now more needed than ever.
