The Scottish players were left dejected at the final whistle. Once again they will miss out on playing at football's greatest stage by a tiny margin. Slovakia may well take their place, as they rose to second place after the final game of the qualification stage.
It was in their own hands as all they had to do was beat Slovenia. They got off to a perfect start, taking the lead in the first half, but a brace from Bezjak after the break ruined Scotland's dreams.
Snodgrass levelled the scoring at 2-2 after 88 minutes but it was too little too late for Gordon Strachan's men. One goal would have sent them into the play-offs for the tournament in Russia next summer but, once again, they will have to wait four more years to fulfill their World Cup dreams.
