"Vinicius on the bench? We have more than 20 players in the squad"

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said his players played "a very serious game" against Real Oviedo and that the 0-3 final score reflects that they played "as a team". "Mbappe has gained four kilos since the World Cup, I see him looking good, focused and eager. I love seeing him make the runs and help out in defence. When we manage to stay close to each other, it's very important. He's been very good, we're growing in the direction we want," said the 'Merengue' coach in the press room at Carlos Tartiere.
On Vinicius, who was a substitute for the first time in two seasons due to a technical decision, Xabi Alonso said he was "decisive" and that, with so many players in the squad, he will try to "get the best out of all of them to be the best team possible". He was also addressing Rodrygo Goes' place in the starting line-up.
"I will make changes from game to game, depending on what the game requires and depending on the physical demands. We have more than 20 players in the squad. I want people to feel important and prepared, we have a demanding season ahead and that is very important for the team's performance," explained the Real Madrid coach when asked about the changes to the starting line-up.
Finally, Xabi Alonso concluded by praising "the great atmosphere at the Carlos Tartiere" and acknowledging that it was "very emotional" to see and hug Santi Cazorla because he knows "everything that this stage at Real Oviedo means".
