English publication 'The Sun' reports that United boss Jose Mourinho is confident that he can beat European Champions Real Madrid to the Belgian's signature, having previously worked with the playmaker at Stamford Bridge.
They claim that the 26-year-old has already turned down the offer of a new contract in the English capital that would have seen his wages rise to some £300,000-a-week as he considers his next move.
Hazard has been outspoken over the years in his admiration for Real boss Zinedine Zidane and the Frenchman is also thought to be an admirer of the Chelsea man's talents.
However, despite reports in Spain that 'Los Blancos' are trying to push throuh a move that will see Hazard join them after next summer's World Cup, 'The Sun' claims that Mourinho is keen to raid his former side for the star, who he sees as the final piece in the jigsaw at Old Trafford.
The move would cost in the region of £90m, beating the current record of £89m, also set by United when the lured Paul Pogba back to the club from Juventus.
Hazard won the title under Mourinho during the 2014-15 season, but is understood to be one of the players whose relationship with the Portuguese was strained before his exit the following season.
Could Hazard be set to make a sensational switch to Old Trafford?
