An outbreak of coronavirus among the AZ Alkmaar players, confirmed by the Dutch club in a statement, has put their Europa League match against Napoli this Thursday in doubt.
At least 12 players have tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest PCR tests done on the squad, Dutch paper 'De Telegraaf' said. Other media outlets like television channel 'NOS' reduce that amount to eight footballers.
AZ Alkmaar, Real Sociedad's opponents in Group F, told UEFA about the situation and they are investigating "the extent of the infections," the club said, without clarifying whether they will ask for the game to be postponed.
The Dutch side reported last Friday of nine possible cases of COVID-19 - four of them players -. That did not prevent them facing VVV Venlo on matchday five of the Eredivisie a day later (2-2).
Naples' local authorities have asked the Italian media outlets for the AZ Alkmaar players to be put in quarantine and for them to be prevented from travelling.
