"The Atletico players were opening the champagne when Sergio scored at 93"

Marcelo, who announced his retirement from football at the beginning of February, was the star of ‘La Revuelta’ on Monday. The former footballer, who won 25 titles with Real Madrid, left several headlines in an interview with David Broncano, presenter of the ‘La1’ programme.

Firstly, the Brazilian spoke about his beginnings at Real Madrid, joining the club in 2006 at the age of 18. The former defender had words of thanks for Roberto Carlos, his idol and the man he had to replace on the left wing: "I arrived when I was 18 and Roberto helped me a lot. I arrived to be his replacement and he helped me a lot. At these levels people tend to have an ego, but that didn't happen with him, with him it was zero. We went to his house at Christmas, the first Christmas I was here".

Marcelo then recalled an incident with Cristiano before the Portuguese signed for Madrid. “My relationship with Cristiano started with a fight. In a Brazil-Portugal match in 2008, I hit him. He elbowed me, I kicked him and he grabbed me by the neck. I couldn't reach him, he was too tall. Shortly after, I received the message that he was going to join the team in two months. I said 'I'm leaving Madrid'. But everything was fine. In training, many times, it's normal,” he said.

After telling this anecdote, the Brazilian gave a 'poisoned' gift to Broncano, a well-known Atletico fan. The presenter received a Madrid shirt, but not just any shirt. It was the one with which the 'Merengue' team won their 11th UCL title in Milan (2016) against the 'Rojiblancos'. “For a Madrid shirt there is no problem, it seems fine to me ... but the shirt of the final against Atletico is ugly,” said the host of the program. “I didn't know whether to bring the 'Decima' or the 'Undecima' shirt,” the former player hesitated on the eve of the Champions League round of 16 derby.

“My intention? I've seen you in some programs in which you speak very well of Atleti. Now, I want you to look at this shirt when you do it again and go more relaxed,” Marcelo said with a laugh. A joke that gave rise to both of them talking about Ramos' emblematic goal in the 93rd minute in the 'Decima' (2014). 

“I saw it in slow motion, incredible. It was a double joy because I was watching the people (the 'Colchoneros' players) opening the champagne and putting on the champions' shirt. At that moment, Ramos scored the goal at 93'. It was a motivation,” he explained. To avoid any problems, the former defender dedicated some nice words to the 'Rojiblancos': “I have a lot of respect for Atleti, they are a great team. They have always been fighting there”.
