Edwards is considered to be one of the most talented young English players in his age group, but has seen just 15 minutes of action for the Tottenham first team.
The England U20 international made his Spurs debut in an EFL Cup clash with Gillingham early in the 2016/17 season and was thought to be hoping that would be the first step on his climb into the first-team ranks.
However, that has not proved to be the case, with Edwards not featuring for Spurs since and seeing a loan spell with Championship side Norwich cut short this season for "personal reasons" after a single appearance as an 84th-minute substitute.
Ahead of his Spurs debut, manager Mauricio Pochettino compared Edwards to Barcelona star Lionel Messi, saying: "The qualities — it's only looks, his body and the way that he plays — remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.
"He's small, he's left-footed, I remember a little bit (Erik) Lamela when he was at River Plate, remember he had long hair, when he was 14, 15 years old, there is a lot of videos on YouTube that you can see, that he took the ball, didn't give a pass and shot straight away.
"He is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player.
"But now it's how he builds his future, that's very important. And it's our responsibility to tell him."
It appears, though, that Edwards' patience has run out, with the youngster now seeking an exit, despite still having two years left on his contract with the club.
