Spoils shared in controversial final fixture of 2017

Arsenal were held to a draw at The Hawthorns after Sanchez's opener was equalised in controversial fashion by Rodriguez. A result that seems fair given the attacking intent displayed by both sides throughout the fixture.

Arsenal travelled to the Hawthorns looking to snatch a win in the final game of 2017, a notable one for Arsene Wenger who took top spot in the record books by taking charge of his 811th match and overhauling Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Wantaway striker Alexis Sanchez started for the Gunners while Mesut Ozil missed out with a slight knee injury as the visitors looked to prolong their 100 per cent scoring record against the Baggies, having found the back of the net in all of their previous 23 encounters.

The final game of the year got underway with Arsenal seeing more of the ball, and it pretty much stayed that way throughout the fixture. Chances, however, were few and far apart and it was the hosts who fired the first warning with Jay Rodriguez heading Phillips' cross into the arms of Petr Cech.

The Czech goalkeeper was largely untroubled all evening, but neither was Foster at the other end. The Baggies keeper was forced into action for the first time after 30 minutes, with Iwobi stepping inside and hitting a left-footed strike down the middle which was parried away awkwardly. The Nigerian had already come close early on, curling an effort inches over the top corner.

The opening exchanges saw both sides find plenty of spaces, but as the minutes went by it gave way to a more subdued approach as the fear of conceding first took over. The visitors were not allowed to create much as they attempted to pass their way through a congested defence. Lacazette and Iwobi were not given an inch and Sanchez was made to drop deep and dictate play from midfield.

As rain began to fall at The Hawthorns, Arsenal enjoyed a flurry of chances but could still not beat Foster. Lacazette saw his low strike cleared by an outstretched leg before his toe-poked effort whistled wide of the post, and Alexis Sanchez then rustled the side-netting from an angle.

Arsenal's slow and predictable passing was easy to deal with for the tight West Brom back line, but when it looked toughest for Wenger's men, Sanchez pounced. The hosts had managed to balance the encounter with a succession of testing balls into the box, but the Chilean was brought down just outside the box and he stepped up to hit the back of the net.

It wasn't without a bit of fortune, as his strike from the D looked to be heading wide before a big deflection off McClean guided it into the corner of the goal. However, when Arsenal thought they had won it, West Brom were awarded a contentious penalty when the ball seemed to come off Chambers' hand.

Jay Rodriguez fired the spot-kick down the middle and the Gunners battled for a winner until the very last second before Mike Dean brought proceedings to a close. Arsene Wenger was left furious by the referee's decision which ultimately saw spoils shared in the final Premier League game of the season.
