Sergio Ramos will not forget Saturday night in Swtizerland. The Spain captain became the European player with the most international caps and he also did something you do not often see.
The central defender is in charge of taking the penalties and he stepped up to take a penalty after a handball in the box. Ramos had scored his last 25 from 12 yards, but Sommer went the right way and saved it.
Ramos wanted to redeem himself later on when Spain got a second spot kick, but his second was even worse than his first. Sommer once again saved it and Spain were still trailing 1-0.
Sergio Ramos was just one off a hat-trick of missed penalties in the same match. That happened to Martin Palermo when playing for Argentina against Colombia on 4th July 1999.
He hit the crossbar with the first of them, the second one went over the goal and Miguel Calero saved the third. There were five penalties in the game and only Colombia's Cordoba manage to score.
If Spain had got another penalty, Ramos would have taken it again, Luis Enrique confirmed post game, and he could have equalled Palermo's unwanted record.
