Despite the victory at Wembley the Argentine was quick to provide his side with a reality check post-match.
"In the end, England did not win, just like Tottenham did not win last season," Pochettino said following the game.
"We are here to win, not to come second, third or fourth. We are here to be first. In our squad, only Hugo Lloris won the World Cup.
"We need to show we are winners. Old Trafford next week will be another challenge and it will show whether we are ready to compete for big things or not."
The message could barely have been clearer: for all the club's progress in recent years has been impressive, Pochettino wants tangible results, silverware.
The demands from the Tottenham boss come as something of a surprise following their lack of transfer dealings in the summer, though his desire for perfection is evident by the fact he wants more from his players, despite having just seen them win their first two games of the Premier League season for the first time in four years.
