Atletico Madrid is set to seal the signing of midfielder Marcos Llorente after announcing a deal with city rivals Real Madrid has been agreed.
The club published a statement announcing the transfer: "our club has reached an agreement with Real Madrid over the transfer of Marcos Llorente, pending medical tests. The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder will sign on a five-year contract."
They also praised the player's ability and performance since the start of his senior career: "He is a midfielder with the ability to play as a defender. At 24 years old, he faces the challenge of wearing the Atlético shirt. Marcos Llorente was born on January 30th of 1995 in Las Rozas (Madrid). His excellent work as both midfielder and defender features a notorious capacity to anticipate and an intuition to intercept his rivals’ passes. During the 2016-17 season, he made his debut, and at only 21 years old he became the player who made the most recoveries during the season, with a total of 303 recoveries."
The 24-year-old’s Father, Paco, and his Grandfather, Ramón Grasso both played for Atlético Madrid during their careers.
This frees up Rodri to move to Manchester City with the Premier League side heavily linked.
Atlético Madrid did not mention a fee in their official announcement but it is believed to be around €40 million.
The midfielder will have the opportunity to continue evolving in the neighboring club, where he will meet Alvaro Morata, the Real madrid academy product who is now also playing with the city rivals. In addition, he will also meet again with Saul, with whom he shared the dressing room in the Spanish National Team during the European Under 21 in which 'La Rojita' won the second place.
