Having been relegated to the Championship at the end of last season, Leicester welcomed Abdul Fatawu as their eighth summer signing on Thursday, following in the footsteps of Harry Winks, Conor Coady, Callum Doyle, Mads Hermansen, Stephy Mavididi, Cesare Casadei and Yunus Akgun. The winger arrives on a one-year loan from Sporting Lisbon.
"I'm very happy. It's an incredible moment for me, I'm happy to be here," he told the club's website. "It was the best time for me to join Leicester. I chose them because I think they can help me develop and mature. The manager spoke to me about the plans he has for me and how he wants me to play - how he wants to help me with my football."
For those who don't know him, Fatawu is a 19-year-old Ghanaian prospect who won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Under-20 Championship, where he was named player of the tournament. He was also part of the Sporting team that beat the Gunners in the Europa League Round of 16.
Mostly a reserve player for the Portuguese club, he never really convinced Ruben Amorim during his appearances for the first team. His loan move to the former 2016 Premier League champions will give him the opportunity to gain more playing time and showcase the full extent of his talent in the Championship, alongside the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr.
