Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was in attendance to see the side win 3-0 against Cardiff City on Saturday; the first game he has personally attended at St James' Park since November. Ashley's appearance in the stands triggered rumors of showdown talks with first team manager Rafa Benitez, who has continually pleaded for the tycoon to invest in some much needed new faces for his side.
As reported by 'SportsMail', after seeing the convincing victory for his side, Ashley proceeded to make his way to Benitez' office at the stadium, in order to offer his congratulations, and reopen discussions about potential January additions to the club playing staff. It is being said that the owner was keen to touch base with the Spaniard, by means of addressing his clear frustration at the lack of transfer activity this month.
Ashley was reportedly joined in the meeting by aide Justin Barnes, with supporters being left to hope that promises were made between the two parties.
Benitez' contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and, he is unlikely to sign an extension if either the team does not survive this season's relegation battle, or Ashley fails to confirm future investment in the first team squad. Newcastle currently sit in 17th, one place and two points outside of the relegation zone.
