In their second pre-season friendly, the European champions were not in the mood for surprises. They took the lead before the quarter-hour mark through James Milner, although there was a large slice of good fortune about the opener.
The Reds midfielder got the ball on the edge of the area after a corner and curled it towards the back post. It seemed as though goalkeeper O'Donnell was going to catch it, but it took a deflection off a defender and flew past him into the net.

Just moments later, Liverpool doubled their lead. Ryan Kent was brought down in the area after exchanging a neat one-two with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the referee instantly pointed to the spot. Milner stepped up and, as always, tucked his penalty hard and low out of the keeper's reach and into the bottom right corner.
