O'Neill is hopeful that he side will improve by the time Euro 2020 qualifying kicks off in March, with supporters being less convinced.
It is nearly five hours since they last scored a home goal and defeat in Denmark on Monday would see them relegated to the third tier of the Nations League.
"There is no question about that, regardless of what happens on Monday night. I think we will be ready for it. We were ready for it a couple of years ago and we had a really strong battle to qualify for the Euros", he told the 'Daily Mail'.
"When the draw comes in, it will give us that momentum for a start when the proper games kick off in March." O'Neill, though, is wearing the look of a man who has fallen out of love with his role. His options are limited, yes, but the team no longer shows the personality which defined their run to the last 16 of Euro 2016.
He does not disagree with that assessment. "I think that's right (the team is missing personality)," he added.
"It's something we have talked about for some considerable time and I agree with you. It's not to do with tactics, it is to do with taking the game by the scruff of the neck and being that character to do that.
"I've known a lot of players who are very decent on the training ground and have never been able to translate it into the big games, but that is something we have to work on.' Meanwhile, Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill believes his team are heading in the right direction despite three defeats from three in their Nations League campaign.
"I think the team is getting stronger, there's a youthfulness about it and maybe more pace than there has been,' said O'Neill ahead of tomorrow's final match against Austria.
"There are a bunch of lads desperate to play so we'll probably make a few changes. I know everyone will be itching to play."
