Marciniak to referee Atletico Madrid v Inter, Orsato in the middle for Dortmund v PSV

The 43-year-old Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be in charge of the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie between Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan at the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium, while 48-year-old Italian Daniele Orsato will be in charge of the Borussia Dortmund-PSV Eindhoven match.

Marciniak, an international since 2011, was in charge of refereeing the finals of the last World Cup in Qatar and the most recent edition of the Champions League. He has refereed Atletico five times in Europe's top competition, most recently in the group-stage home clash against Porto in the 2022-2023 season. The 'Colchoneros' record with him is four wins and one defeat.

In addition, he also took part in the final of the European Super Cup of the 2018-2019 campaign, won by Diego Pablo Simeone's side against Real Madrid. Regarding Inter, apart from the last Champions League final, in which the Italian side lost against Manchester City, there are five other precedents in the tournament that ended with one win, three draws and one defeat.

On this occasion, Marciniak will be assisted by an all-Polish refereeing staff, with Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik as linesmen and Tomasz Kwiatkowski in charge of the VAR. Orsato also knows what it is like to referee a Champions League final, in his case the 2020 final. His CV also includes the opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar between the hosts and Ecuador and the semi-final between Argentina and Croatia at the same event.

He has refereed Dortmund on three occasions in the Champions League, all of which ended in defeat for the German club. As for his refereeing of PSV Eindhoven, there have been two matches, both of which ended in draws, including the 2-2 draw against Sevilla in the group stage this season. He will be supported by linesmen Ciro Carbone and Alessandro Giallantini and by Paolo Valeri as the VAR referee, all of whom are also Italian.
