Luis Suarez returns to the Uruguayan national team

Historic goalscorer Luis Suarez will return to play for the Uruguay national team after being called up by Marcelo Bielsa for the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against Argentina and Bolivia. On Monday, the Uruguayan Football Association announced the list of called-up players, in which the main changes are the call-up of the Gremio striker and the return of centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez and midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

The last time the three players played for Uruguay was in the match in which the 'Celeste' said goodbye to the World Cup in Qatar 2022, beating Ghana 2-0 with goals from Giorgian de Arrascaeta. Suarez, until now, had not been called up by Bielsa, Gimenez was suspended and Bentancur recovered, days ago, from a serious injury he suffered in February this year playing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Uruguay's list of called-up players:

Goalkeepers: Sergio Rochet (Internacional-BRA), Santiago Mele (Junior-COL), Franco Israel (Sporting-POR).

Defenders: Bruno Mendez (Corinthians-BRA), Sebastian Caceres (América-MEX), Guillermo Varela (Flamengo-BRA), Jose Maria Gimenez (Atletico Madrid-SPA), Matias Vina (Sassuolo-ITA), Mathias Olivera (Napoli-ITA), Ronald Araujo (Barcelona).

Midfielders: Federico Valverde (Real Madrid-SPA), Manuel Ugarte (PSG-FRA), Nicolas de la Cruz (River Plate-ARG), Agustin Cannobio (Athletico Paranaense-BRA), Facundo Torres (Orlando City-USA), Maximiliano Araujo (Toluca-MEX), Facundo Pellistri (Manchester United-ENG), Giorgian de Arrascaeta (Flamengo-BRA), Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham-ENG) and Felipe Carballo (Gremio-BRA).

Attackers: Darwin Nunez (Liverpool-ENG), Cristian Olivera (Los Angeles-USA), Federico Vinas (Leon-MEX) and Luis Suarez (Gremio-BRA).
