When Klopp arrived at Anfield, Liverpool were in a surprising 10th place in the Premier League. Their last title came three years before and they had only played in one of the last six Champions Leagues.
The German coach, on the other hand, spent many years at Borussia Dortmund, where he led them to win the Bundesliga and overthrow Bayern's leadership at the top. His achievements in Germany put him on the agenda of a club that needed to regain the joys of the past.
Klopp took up the challenge with ambition from the first minute. "When I sit here in four years I think we'll have a title. If not, I'll have to go to Switzerland," he said in his presentation. And how right he was!
The coach promised a defined style of play with which he has fulfilled to the maximum: "I want quick football, with transitions, at full throttle, very exciting, intense, one that reflects the club and their only ambition."
Now, the German smiles from the top. In June he won Liverpool's sixth Champions League after defeating Tottenham 1-0 at the Metropolitano and after having eliminated Barcelona in the semifinals with the well-remembered 4-0 win at Anfield. Far from conforming and having remained one point away from winning the Premier League last season (Man City beat them to the title), his team's hope is to come away this time with the domestic title.
Liverpool are well in the lead with 24 points. They have won all of their Premier League games this years (eight) and, at the moment they are taking over the season it its first few months. They are the least scored team in the Premier League with six goals conceded in eight rounds and only Guardiola's team (27) beat them in goals in favour (20).
The project is choral, but is led by one of the most fearsome attacking tridents in Europe. Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, with the invaluable collaboration of Alisson or Van Dijk, among others, have been key in putting Klopp in the legendary category of coaches.
Not in vain, the coach took the 'The Best 2019' award which recognises him as the best coach of last season.
These four years have revalued both the team and the figure of the coach. In fact, in Merseyride and fear that the German team may throw the glove in case of dispensing with Joachim Löw but, for now, raise the expected Premier and repeat in the Champions are his only two obsessions.
