Manchester City's dream of a Quadruple is very much still alive and kicking after a tense 1-0 win over Premier League strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion. City have already won the League Cup and are now in the FA Cup final, with a Premier League showdown with Liverpool likely to go down to the wire and a Champions League Quarter-Final against Tottenham in the week to look forward to. The unprecedented quadruple could be on!
This was not a particularly good game of football, with the stand out performers probably coming in Brighton shirts, Matt Ryan and Anthony Knockaert were superb, with the Frenchman running for 90 minutes non stop. City did dominate the early exchanges, and it seemed then that the tie was heading down one path, a comfortable City win.
Gabriel Jesus headed Kevin De Bruyne's sensational pass into the bottom left corner to give City what turned out to be an unasaillable lead after just 4 minutes. City absolutely dominated the first 15 minutes with 81% possession in the opening exchanges, it appeared it was going to be a formality.
Brighton did slowly get back into the game and it ended up being a really tight, tense and scrappy affair, with only a handful of shots on target all game. The real talking point came on 32 minutes when Jahanbakhsh and Kyle Walker got into some heated words, with Walker appearing to headbutt the Israeli.
It went to a VAR review and it seemed Walker would be given his marching orders, but instead the referee maintained his original decision and both players were booked.
Brighton were then the better side for large parts of the Second half but they just couldn't quite find the cutting edge, with Glenn Murray almost tapping in after Shane Duffy won a header, Aymeric Laporte just doing enough to prevent a Brighton equaliser.
Anthony Knockaert looked to be felled by Laporte in the City box but the referee again deemed it not to be a penalty. Whilst Lewis Dunk was given the elbow treatment by CIty.
On 89 minutes, Brighton threw everyone forward, inviting City onto a scintillating counter attack, only for Matt Ryan to save Sterling's effort from a sublime Gabriel Jesus cross. Oddly, that was the game as City could simply keep the ball in the Brighton corner and they were heading to Wembley once again for a final.
Chris Hughton and captain Dunk had a few words to say to the referee, but City did enough, they won the tie and will be heading to Wembley again next month, possibly chasing the 3rd trophy of an incredible quadruple.
