The World Cup kicked off on Thursday with a match between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia. Of the three matches played the following day, Atletico had representatives in two fixtures; Uruguay v Egypt and Spain v Portugal.
The impressive season that Diego Simeone's men had enjoyed, has continued on in Russia. Gimenez and Diego Costa practically become national heroes overnight for their performances.
Gimenez has had a particularly brilliant week. Not only did the 23-year-old renew his contract with Atleti until 2023, but he also saved Uruguay with a header in the 89th minute that sealed their victory against Egypt.
As for Diego Costa, despite many having criticised his inclusion on the Spanish shortlist, the striker was crucial in Spain's 3-3 tie with Portugal.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a penalty goal, but the 29-year-old responded to equalise before finding the net again in the 55th minute.
Atletico fans will be delighted that treasured members of their squad are triumphing on the global stage, and they will see plenty more of their players in the tournament this summer.
