Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed plans to strengthen the full-back position in the upcoming summer transfer window, highlighting the need for specialist reinforcements despite recent improvisations within his squad.
“We will need a new full-back in the summer, obviously. Nico O’Reilly is helping, but he's not a left-back," Guardiola said after City’s latest victory. O'Reilly, whose position is midfield, has been used at left-back in recent games due to injuries in the squad. While his performances have impressed, Guardiola acknowledged that relying on players out of position is not sustainable in the long term.
The Sky Blues have targeted Tottenham's Destiny Udogie and Juventus' Andrea Cambiaso as both players fit Guardiola's profile of dynamic and versatile full-backs. Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Udogie is among the Manchester side's top targets for the summer transfer window.
There seems to be a clear need for a full-back at the Etihad Stadium as it is unlikely that one of the Sky Blues' mainstays in that position, Kyle Walker, will return from his loan spell at Milan only to leave again to try new challenges.
