Unlike in England, Monday night kickoffs are not common in Germany, and fans have protested against what they think is the abandonment of German football culture. Borussia Dortmund's chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke, can't see them continuing past 2021, when a new TV rights deal will be negotiated.
"If 80 percent of the Germans reject that, and if we only get 54,000 instead of 81,000 coming to the stadium, then I am pretty sure that once the TV rights will be auctioned again in 2021, Monday just won't happen anymore," he said.
He also noted the German people's increasing wariness of the commercialisation of football, and rejected the idea of a 'Super League' of the top European teams.
"Very likely in the south (of Europe), the big Spanish and big Italian teams, I see a very big desire to do something like that (a Super League). But in England I am not quite sure, and I don't think that would go down well in Germany at all," he explained.
No doubt he will have some sympathisers in England, with many fans being forced to travel the length of the country on a weeknights to suit the TV scedules.
