Belgium said goodbye to the World Cup in the group stages. Their draw against Croatia meant they were left with no chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals, and they were then one of the main surprises of the tournament. What is more, after six years at the helm, Roberto Martinez left his role.
The goalkeeper who came third at the Russia World Cup with the Red Devils, spoke after exiting, and made it clear who he will be supporting from now until the end of the tournament: "Now, I'm rooting for Spain, and I also wish the best of luck to all my teammates left in the competition".
"In this World Cup and the Euros, we weren't ourselves, it's a bit embarassing. We'll see what hapens, who'll stay and who won't. Football moves quickly, in March there are already qualification matches for the Euros 2024", the Real Madrid footballer said.
He later added that: "It's difficult to call it the 'Golden Generation' when you don't win anything. We're not a golden generation, we're a generation with a lot of talent and Europe's best players. We showed in Russia in 2018 that we were a Belgium side who played good football".
