The Champions League final is a huge occasion for football supporters all over the world. This year's is even more special as it features an all-English final for just the third time ever.
Man City are the favourites to win the trophy for the first time ever, but Chelsea have won the last two matches between the sides. Football boots have become more and more eyecatching over the years and manufacturers are delighted when a player wearing their boots scores the winning goal. As the Champions League final approaches, Betway ranked their top 10 final moments.
The 1998 Champions League final saw Real Madrid face off with Juventus. 'Los Blancos' had not lifted the trophy since 1966 and Montenegrin forward Predrag Mijatovic's 66th minute goal ended Madrid's 32 year wait for the trophy. Manolo Sanchis was the captain while Roberto Carlos, Raul and Fernando Morientes all also featured.
Mijatovic wore big black and white Puma Kings boots. Nowadays, boots are much lighter and you are unlikely to see a boot like this worn by a professional player, but they became a collector's item for many Real Madrid fans.
The 1999 Champions League final is one few football lovers will ever forget. Man Utd faced Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou in Barcelona and Mario Basler gave the Germans a sixth minute lead. After 90 minutes, Bayern were still ahead and then all hell broke loose. Teddy Sheringham levelled in the 91st minute and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got a winner two minutes later to break Bayern's hearts in dramatic fashion.
When Solskjaer scored the winning goal, the Norwegian was wearing Black Nike Mercurial II boots. Mercurial had been won by Ronaldo of Brazil at the 1998 World Cup and then just a year later, they featured in photographs and videos of one of the Champions League's greatest moments.
In 2002, Real Madrid played against Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Raul had put the Spanish side ahead and Lucio had levelled the scores five minutes later. The game was then 1-1 and just before the interval, Zidane pulled off a moment of magic. Robert Carlos crossed the ball and the Frenchman pulled off a spectacular volley to beat Hans-Jorg Butt in the goal.
The red and black Adidas Predator Mania boots were used by Zinedine Zidane on that occasion and the fact he scored with a volley meant the bottom of his boot was very visible on television pictures. Real Madrid took another 12 years to win the competition after this and that meant the goal and the boots worn were very special.
Liverpool against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final is possibly the greatest final ever played. Paolo Maldini put the Italians ahead inside the opening 60 seconds and then when Hernan Crespo netted twice in five minutes towards the end of the first half, Milan looked to have the final in the bag. However, Rafa Benitez's Liverpool had something special in store. Steven Gerrard scored after 54 minutes and then Vladimir Smicer, with his Mizuno Morelia Wave boots, and Xabi Alonso both scored in six minutes to draw the English side level.
The game went to extra-time and then penalties where Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek's saves saw Liverpool win 3-2 on spot kicks. It was one of the best matches ever and Smicer's Mizuno boots became part of a historic night in Turkey.
The 2008 Champions League final was the first all-English final as Man Utd played Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Cristiano Ronaldo gave United the lead after 26 minutes, but Frank Lampard levelled for the Blues right on half-time. There were no further goals in the 90 minutes and the teams could not be separated in extra-time either. That meant the game went to penalties. As the match began at 22:45 local time to suit CET time broadcasters, penalties continued until around 1.30am.
John Terry had a penalty to win 5-4, but he lost his footing at the vital moment and the ball struck the post. The tie went to sudden death and Nicolas Anelka missed Chelsea's 7th penalty and Man Utd won 6-5 on spot kicks. Terry's miss after slipping saw his Umbro SX Valor boots come into the spotlight although the wet surface could be more to blame.
Had it not been for a controversial refereeing display at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would have had the chance to take revenge on Man Utd in the following season's final in Rome. Instead, United were up against Barca and the Catalans were too strong for them. Samuel Eto'o put Barca ahead with 10 minutes on the clock and then 21 year-old Lionel Messi headed home the second with 20 minutes remaining. That was the last final to take place on a Wednesday before UEFA decided to move it to a Saturday.
There was something very interesting about Messi's goal though. Despite scoring with his head, the Argentine's boot came off. In the celebration he kissed it twice and that led to the boot getting a lot of attention. A cyan and black coloured Adidas F50i was the lucky boot.
In 2010, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan reached the final at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. It was the first ever Champions League final to take place on a Saturday in a bid to try and increase television audiences around the world. The first goal saw the Argentinian chip the ball over keeper Hans-Jorg Butt and Milito's second 20 minutes from the end sealed a 2-0 win for Jose Mourinho's men. Funnily enough, Inter started the match without a single Italian. Marco Materazzi did come on in the closing stages of the game though.
Diego Milito got Inter's first Champions League trophy for 45 years and he used Adidas adiPURE III boots to send Inter to victory. He certainly had his shooting boots on that evening.
In 2013, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both reached the Champions League final. The two met at Wembley, which hosted the final for the second time in three years to celebrate 150 years since the FA was founded. After a goalless first half, Mario Mandzukic scored for Bayern on the hour mark, but Ilkay Gundogan levelled from the spot for Dortmund after Dante had fouled Marco Reus in the area. The game looked set for extra-time until Arjen Robben's 89th minute winner for Bayern Munich.
The Dutchman's Dark Blue Adidas F50 adizero boots scored the winning goal and they were some of the lightest boots around at the time.
Real Madrid played Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, the home of Benfica. Real were looking to win their first Champions League for 12 years while Atletico wanted to lift their first Champions League trophy ever. Diego Costa went into the game unfit, but he started and had to be replaced after nine minutes due to injury. That proved to be costly. Diego Godin put Atletico ahead after 36 minutes following a mistake by Iker Casillas and Atletico were still 0-1 up when five added minutes were shown on the board after 90 minutes.
Unfortunately for them, Sergio Ramos headed home from a corner in the 93rd minute and the game went to extra-time. Gareth Bale gave Real the lead after 110 minutes and then Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo from the spot completed the 4-1 victory in the final two minutes of the contest.
Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty made it 4-1 and gave Madrid their 10th Champions League. The Portuguese wore orange Nike Mercurial Vapor IX boots and the brightly coloured boots were part of a superb night for Real Madrid.
The 2018 Champions League final saw Real Madrid looking for their third consecutive Champions League title. Liverpool were their opponents in Kiev and nothing went right for Jurgen Klopp's men. They lost Mohamed Salah to injury in the 31st minute and they fell behind in comedic fashion after 51 minutes. Liverpool keeper Loris Karius threw the ball out, Karim Benzema stuck his leg out and the ball went into the back of the net. Sadio Mane levelled for Liverpool four minutes later and then on 63 minutes, Gareth Bale scored a screamer.
The Welshman scored an outrageous overhead kick with his blue and yellow Adidas X18+ boots to leave the keeper with absolutely no chance. That put Madrid 2-1 up and then Bale put the icing on the cake with those same boots seven minutes from the end after Karius was unable to deal with what should have been a routine save. Despite Karius' mistakes taking centre stage, Bale's goals and boots should not be forgotten about. In fact, those boots were Adidas' most important boots for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which was won by France.
