In 2020, Damien Rieu, activist of a French far right party 'Reconquete', posted two tweets which suggested that Karim Benzema is related to terrorism. In the first one, he said that he had met with Nourdine Maoume, who was linked at that time with the murder of Samuel Paty. The secondary school teacher's death caused anger across France.
In the second tweet, he showed a photo of the Real Madrid striker raising his finger, as he usually does to celebrate his goals, and he juxtaposed them with a photo of jihadists making the same sign. Now, Rieu has been taken to court.
He himself has revealed the news. In the latest text written on social media, he mocked the footballer for wanting him to be found guilty of defamation. He even included a photo of the document which proves he has to go to court.
Although cases of this type usually take their time, it is quite likely that there will be news soon because Damien Rieu is a person who uses his public profiles regularly. That means we are getting regularly informed of the situation.
