Real Madrid boast the most league titles (33), but they have only won two in the last eleven years.
When Zidane returned to the Bernabeu, he sent a clear message: the league has to be a priority.
Madrid is now as it was a season ago. In game-week 30 of La Liga, they sit in third place, 13 points behind Barcelona.
Although, last season, both had six points more than in the current campaign, Atletico came second.
Since Zidane arrived at the Bernabéu in January 2016, the points difference between Madrid and Barça is 23 in favor of the Catalan side (302 to 279) despite Los Blancos winning the league in the 2016-17 campaign.
In the last two seasons, that difference has increased. The 13 points from this year are added to the 17 that they ended on last year (93 by 76).
This means that in the last 68 league games the difference has grown to 30 points (163 by 133).
Real Madrid is the king of the Champions League, a competition with has had a detrimental effect on their La Liga efforts. Los Blancos won three consecutive Champions League titles, but are now focused on regaining domestic prestige.
