Atletico Madrid have always been criticised for maintaining a defensive style of play and with a not very well defined plan in attack. One goal victories are the norm and it is rare to see Atletico thrashing their opponent.
And the stats support that. The team from the capital scored four goals on Saturday in the 0-4 victory at Deportivo Alaves. That was the first time they had scored four goals in the league for 13 months. That was in a 2-5 victory over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
If we take into account all competitions, they have had already done it on two occasions. Atletico beat Real Madrid 4-2 in the European Super Cup in Estonia. That said, that was in 120 minutes, not in 90 minutes. The other time was back on 5th December when Diego Simeone's side ran out 4-0 winners in the second leg of the last 32 Copa del Rey tie against third tier Sant Andreu.
That said, Atletico have really missed a flood of goals in certain moments this season which could have really changed the course of some matches.
