Atletico's Morata suffers "sprain of the internal lateral ligament of his right knee"

Alvaro Morata will miss the Champions League round of 16 with Atletico Madrid, but will make the EURO with the Spanish national team. The striker injured his knee on Sunday afternoon in a clash with Soumare during the 24th La Liga matchday 24 visit to Sevilla. The striker landed badly after a head-on clash with his opponent.

After he left the pitch in tears and was substituted because he would not be able to continue, the 'Colchoneros' published, on their social networks, that he had suffered a "sprain" and a "contusion" of which more details have emerged on Monday morning. The medical staff of the Spanish team have already had time to formulate a full diagnosis and this indicates that he has a "bone contusion" and a "sprain of the internal lateral ligament of the right knee".

"Alvaro Morata had to be substituted in the first half of the match played at the Sanchez Pizjuan against Sevilla. On Monday morning he underwent an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury and the medical services report indicates that he suffers "a bone contusion and sprain of the internal lateral ligament of his right knee". He is awaiting further treatment," reads the statement.

Although Atletico Madrid did not give any timetable for his recovery, it is quite likely that Morata will be out for a month or a month and a half. This rules him out of the Champions League round of 16 against Inter Milan - 20th February at the Giuseppe Meazza and 13th March at the Civitas Metropolitano - but not for the European Championship with the Spanish national team. The tournament kicks off in June.
