Theo was the first to leave Atletico. He left for rivals Real in 2017 for 24 million euros, although he is currently on loan at Real Sociedad. The Atletico supporters have not forgotten that one of their future stars left the club to join a major rival, with a fee of only 24 million euros coming in. This left all the hope of the supporters on the shoulders of Lucas.
He is the older of the two brothers at 23, and he managed to get himself into the first team bit by bit, and eventually completely wrestled the first team jersey off of Filipe Luis in the 2016-17 season. He has ended up being an important and reliable player under Diego Simeone, being used as a centre half as well as a left back.
However, everything changed when the Frenchman starred at the World Cup in Russia, bringing the trophy home with some phenomenal performances. This led to some serious interest from many of Europe's top clubs, including of course, Bayern Munich. The German Champions tried to sign Lucas in January but didn't succeed.
Now they've got their man, for an eye watering 80 million euros, smashing their transfer record in the process. This means that from the Hernandez brothers alone, Atletico made a profit of 104 million euros for two players they had hoped would be at the club for many years. In a sporting sense the profit is of little importance, however, from an economic point of view, there has never been a better investment at the club.
