'An element of surprise': De Bruyne opens up on shock Man City exit

Speaking after City's recent match at Goodison Park, the 33-year-old paused on his way to the team coach to reflect candidly on the events that led to his impending departure. Despite his composed performances on the pitch, De Bruyne confessed that the news had left him reeling.
The Belgian midfielder revealed that he was informed of the club's decision during a short meeting with sporting director Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano. Although manager Pep Guardiola played a role in the choice, he was not present at the meeting.
"There was definitely an element of surprise," said De Bruyne. "I hadn't received any sort of offer throughout the season, so when they told me the contract wouldn't be renewed, I was a bit shocked. But I've accepted it. I genuinely still feel capable of playing at this level, but clubs have to make tough calls sometimes."
The news came as a blow to De Bruyne, who had hoped to continue contributing to the side. In the days that followed the meeting and led up to his public announcement, he admitted to struggling with the emotional weight of the situation.
"My family were away on holiday at the time, which made it even more surreal. I had a few days to process everything before I made it public, and honestly, that was the hardest part. Once it was out in the open, I felt a bit of relief," he explained.
The Belgian stressed that he holds no bitterness towards the club's board, despite feeling he still has more to offer. "I told them I still believe in my ability to perform. I'm not 25 anymore, but I can still do the job. I'm open to what comes next – I'll take into account everything: sporting challenges, family considerations… It has to make sense for all of us."
Though the 33-year-old stopped short of detailing the rationale given to him, he hinted that Manchester City's difficulties this season may have influenced the club's thinking. "It's probably down to how the team has performed this year," he said. "But I see that as a temporary dip – these things happen."
Despite the abrupt nature of his farewell, De Bruyne remains focused on finishing the season strongly, determined to give everything for a club he’s called home for the past ten years.
"I love football. I still love being out there on the pitch, doing what I do best. That won't change," he concluded.
