He has been one of Barcelona's main targets for months and it seems like his arrival in the Catalan capital this summer is close to becoming reality. As every day goes by, Matthijs de Ligt is closer to becoming a Barcelona player. Or at least that is what it seems.
The Barca board has been working hard for months to try and get his signature and all seems to indicate that the talks are proving to be successful.
In fact, in Holland there was talk of a possible agreement between Barcelona and Ajax during the last ECA meeting held in Amsterdam. 'De Telegraaf' pointed out that the two clubs had sealed an agreement which was almost complete and now the latest information seems to suggest that he is very close to joining the Spanish giants.
According to information from 'Sport' on its front page this Monday, one of Barcelona's competitors for the footballer has apparently given up on the central defender.
The Catalan paper says that Bayern Munich, who had De Ligt in their list of targets for various months, apparently now have other priorities to reinforce their squad. The arrival of Lucas Hernandez at the club from Bavaria has meant that the Dutch defender is no longer a necessity for them and Bayern have now set their eyes on Ziyech, another Ajax player.
As a result, Barcelona will have a clear path to get their much desired transfer and therefore have De Jong and De Ligt together in the summer.
With all that, Barca will look to accelerate even more the operation and leave everything agreed and sealed before the Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester United.
