Struggling with Belgium and dropped by Madrid under Zidane, Courtois is struggling both on the pitch and on it. He is proving to be unpopular with the Real Madrid fans after a spell of poor performances led to boos ringing around the stadium everytime his name was called out, causing a big loss in confidence of the Belgian keeper.
Keylor Navas has regained the starting jersey under Zidane, and in his opening game against Celta Vigo, made some fantastic saves to keep a clean sheet. Just when the former Chelsea man needed a big performance, he made a massive error in the game against Russia, leaving former Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard to save his blushes to win 3-1.
In 32 matches this season for madrid, Courtois has conceded 42 goals. (including 5 in El Clasico against Barcelona) This translates to 1.3 goals per game. This is Courtois' worst season since the 2015-16 season with Chelsea when he conceded 37 goals in 29 games. After that his statistics were more impressive with 33 goals in 40 games in 2016-2017 season (when Chelsea won the Premier League) and 46 goals in 45 games last season.
Neither at Genk or at Atletico Madrid did Courtois have statistics anywhere near what he has at Real Madrid. Real are hoping that he can improve under the guidance of Zindedine Zidane, back to the form he showed during the World Cup where he won the Golden Glove. If they can get that form out of him, they're hoping they can lower his goals per game ratio massively.
