The incident took place early this Friday. The training ground is situated in Vargem Grande, in the western part of Rio de Janeiro, where fire crews were quickly called to the scene. According to various sources, the fire has left a total of 10 dead and three injured, with two of those injuries believed to be very serious. The identity of the victims is still not known.
Although nothing is known of those affected, according to the Cuerpo de Bomberos (Firemen's Association) in Rio, youths aged between 14 and 17 are believed to have been in the affected part of the building.
The emergency call took place at 5:17am local time. Firemen managed to bring the fire under control around two hours after it had broken out.
The affected area of the training ground had no access to water or light at the time, making the jobs of the fire crews even harder. The training ground was considered one of the most modern in South America, and one of the biggest in the world. In fact, in 2018, a new section was added to better equip the training ground, used for both professional and leisure purposes.
